This afternoon just before 4 p.m. the Marquette County "911" got a call about a car driving erratically. The car was driving on 139 and it crashed into an embankment. A "Good Samaritan" assisted and identified the issue with the driver as a medical condition. While emergency first responders were responding to the medical emergency the Endeavor Fire Department was staging their apparatus in the south bound lane of 139, the fire department was in full emergency mode and had all emergency lights flashing on their equipment.
A vehicle going south on 139 didn't notice the equipment and swerved to avoid the fire truck and struck a firefighter who was standing next to his fire truck. The firefighter was a volunteer and he was severely injured. He was transported to Divine Savior Hospital in Portage and then flown to the U.W. Trauma Center in Madison where he died of his injuries.
The crash is being investigated. There were no other injuries reported.
