The Ashwaubenon Village Board unanimously voted in favor of Brown County's proposed room tax plan, but the county still needs the stamp of approval from other communities like Green Bay. Earlier in the month, the Redevelopment Authority blocked the plan.
The county presented a similar version of the plan to the village board on Tuesday night. Village leaders were all for in favor it, because they feel it would be good for the county's economy and bring in more tourists.
In this proposal, room taxes collected from 2030 to 2050 will be used to pay off the expo center, which is supposed to replace the Veterans Memorial Complex.
County leaders are hoping the village's approval will help the city of Green Bay make a decision.
"The important thing is we stay as a community to fund these assets. I think from their standpoint, they see the Village of Ashwaubenon joining in, they collect 40 percent of the room tax, so between Green Bay and the Village of Ashwaubenon, they collect the majority," said Troy Streckenbach, Brown County Executive.
The county still needs approval from Village of Bellevue and Allouez. The RDA still needs to approve the plan. The City of Green Bay will meet with them. A date has not been scheduled yet.
