Vigil held to honor Sara Schmidt

Posted

January 9th, 2018 is the one month anniversary of Sara Schmidt's death.

While not everyone at the vigil knew her personally, they were touched by her story.

“She was really fun and charismatic, loved her family, loved her children,” said Katie Huskey

Last month, Sara's husband was released from jail. Sara had reported that he'd sexually assaulted her.

After his release, he fatally shot her then he killed himself. Three children were left behind.

Now community members are rallying and have a message.

"I would tell her, I’m so sorry that I feel like our system failed her and let her down,” said Huskey.

People hope her story will spark a change.

As community remembers Sara, they'll work to make sure her voice is still heard.

And with that voice, they'll continue to take on domestic violence.
