A man's body has been recovered from a river in Florence County.
The Florence County Sheriff's Department says the body of Jerry Hamilton, 60, was found at 4:43 p.m. on Wednesday, where he drowned. He was from Crystal Falls, Michigan.
The Sheriffs Department got a call from a neighbor, saying they found a car that was partially submerged in the Brule River. Deputies say there was no one inside except a dog.
Due to weather conditions, officials said it wasn't safe to search for the driver. On Wednesday, a Remotely Operated Vehicle was deployed by the DNR. They were able to find the body in the afternoon.
Hamilton's body was found about 10 feet from where his car was found, in five feet of water.
Many questions are still unanswered, but the Sheriffs Department says they do not suspect foul play in Hamilton's death.
Deputies believe Hamilton did try to rescue himself.
"It appears that he tried turning around, and that's when the back wheels turned into the river," says Chief Deputy David Gribble. "At that point in time, we're not sure what happened after that."
The Florence County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Wisconsin DNR, the Michigan DNR and the Florence Fire Department.
