It was a scary end to Memorial Day weekend for 10 people in Fond du Lac County as a fire ripped through their apartment building, leaving them all without a home.
It happened on County Highway G in Marytown, an unincorporated community in the town of Calumet, just after 8:30 p.m. on Monday night.
Tenant Duane Feustel was inside when the fire broke out, getting ready to go to bed. His wife was already asleep when he heard banging on the door to the downstairs units, he said.
A man riding his bike past the building saw the flames and was trying to warn those inside about the fire, Feustel explained.
"Woke up my wife and we come out with basically the clothes on our backs and the basics that we needed," he said.
Feustel, his wife, and one other tenant were home at the time.
The fire started on the south side of the building, according to Sgt. Eric Halbach of the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office. The building is a loss and the cause is still under investigation.
"Possibly could have been started by an electrical fire, but at this point in time it's not known for sure," said Sgt. Halbach.
No one was injured in the fire. The Red Cross is assisting those affected.
Several fire departments from Mt. Calvary, New Holstein, St. Anna, Oakfield, St. Cloud, Eden, Stockbridge, Kiel, Lamartine, Chilton and the town of Fond du Lac along with first responders from Town of Calumet, New Holstein and Stockbridge assisted.
