A train struck an unoccupied vehicle that had been involved in a hit-and-run crash in Appleton Tuesday morning.
At about 11:05 p.m. Appleton police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Richmond and College avenues for a reported hit and run crash, according to a Appleton Police Department media release. The vehicle that was struck was pushed up onto the median on the south east side of the intersection, striking a fence.
The striking vehicle left the area.
As the struck vehicle was partially over the railroad tracks and stuck on the snowbank, officers requested dispatch notify the railroad. The driver of the vehicle was removed to a squad car for safety and a tow truck was called.
Additional units arrived for traffic control, due to the high traffic location of the crash.
A CN railroad train had not yet received notification of the crash and struck the unoccupied vehicle. The train had been traveling about 20 miles per hour and did try to stop, unsuccessfully. The train struck the driver’s side rear of the vehicle, pushing it aside. No one was injured.
The struck vehicle was removed by the tow company. The train remained where it was until the tracks and the train were inspected by CN for safety, as required by federal law.
The train blocked the intersection for a little more than one hour.
