The use of deadly force was justified in the Dec. 10 officer-involved shooting in the town of Algoma, said Winnebago County District Attorney Christian Gossett while releasing his summary of findings in the incident during a press conference this afternoon.
The incident involved Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputy Kyle Schoonover and Oshkosh Police Officer Robert Kraemer. A squad dash video camera shows officers told a man to show his hands before he lined up his vehicle to hit them, Gossett said. Fifteen shots were fired.
Richard Klemz, 57 of Oshkosh, had been reported as suicidal in a 911 call before the officer-involved shooting incident, according to Winnebago County Sheriff John Matz.
Klemz allegedly rammed the front of a squad car and struck a private citizen's vehicle in the Algoma Town Hall parking lot prior to shots being fired by a Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office deputy and an Oshkosh police officer.
Charges related to a Dec. 10 incident which led to the officer-involved shooting were filed Dec. 16, according to Winnebago County Sheriff's Capt. David Mack. Klemz faces charges of criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct.
The Department of Justice is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Anne E. Schwartz, director of communications and public affairs with the DOJ, said she had nothing new to share regarding the investigation Wednesday.
The District Attorney's final report will be released today, Gossett said.
