Hurricane Harvey has touched the American conscience, asking us to open our hearts and our pocketbooks.

But the Better Business Bureau warns that con artists try to take advantage of charitable efforts after disaster strikes.

Experts say to research the charity before giving to them. Ask representatives how your donation will be specifically used, and if your donation is tax-deductible.

"The biggest mistake is the flip side of what makes us want to do this and that is to think with your heart and not your head," said Jim Temmer, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin.

Do not donate cash or wire money, they add.

The BBB has a list of accredited charities raising funds for Harvey relief assistance.
