GREEN BAY -- It's the first day the IRS will accept income tax returns for 2015. It's also the beginning of a huge time for tax scams and identity theft. Phone calls and emails are easy targets, many asking for your personal information or demanding money.
Fraudulent tax returns do happen and it can cause you to wait up to 12 weeks if you are expecting a return. One way to avoid that fate, is filing early.
"If you already have your return filed a person trying to file fraudulent would have to file with paper which they;re probably not going to do they're gonna move on the the next victim" Says Jill Schoenwalder, a tax preparer with Tax Management Services in Green Bay.
The IRS is also working to make sure that e-filing is safer this year. There will be extra security questions, password requirements but also security features that are invisible to the user. These other security features will target hackers who bulk file stolen taxes.
