WAUSAU (NBC26) — A small plane carrying gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany made an emergency water landing Saturday night while on approach to the Wausau airport.
In a campaign press release, Tiffany said he and the pilot evacuated the aircraft as it began to sink. The two men swam to shallow water where they walked to shore.
Tiffany said he and the pilot suffered only minor injuries.
"God was watching over us tonight," Tiffany said.
In his statement, Tiffany said he was flying home from La Crosse County Lincoln Days Dinner when the airplane, a four-seat Beechcraft Bonanza, lost power.
First responders took Tiffany and the pilot to a Wausau hospital.
"I am incredibly grateful to be here in the hospital with my wife, Chris, by my side," Tiffany said. "An experience like this reminds you just how precious life is."
