Social media giant Facebook raised questions this week, after the site was accused of leaving conservative news out of its trending topics.
While social media used to be viewed in chronological order, companies such as Facebook and Twitter have begun using specialized algorithms to decide what users see.
The companies say that these algorithms spotlight content based on user behavior to deliver a customized experience.
"That's why you see things in newsfeed higher than other stories or routinely see things from some friends and not other friends," said Re/code's social media editor, Kurt Wagner.
The concerns sprouting from these practices focus on whether the humans behind these algorithms are using them to suppress certain types of content.
