Schools across Northeast Wisconsin held Veterans Day programs on Friday to show appreciation for those who've served our county.
In Green Bay, 5th graders at Elmore Elementary School sang patriotic songs to their guests of honor. They also gave them a special pin and a poem to take home.
In Appleton, Einstein Middle School served a free breakfast and put on a Veterans Day tribute program. It has been a tradition at the school for more than a decade.
Organizers say it's important to recognize our local heroes.
"Many times we take for granted the sacrifices that people have made through the history of our country and the time they've given up. Students maybe aren't even aware of that, so I think that awareness and the connection. Many of our students have members of their families, but it's something that really hasn't been talked about."
During the program, students presented a $5,000 donation to the Old Glory Honor Flight. The money will be used to send 10 veterans to visit their national memorials in Washington, D.C.
