Staying safe while out on the ice this winter

Ice on lakes around the state of Wisconsin are dismal right now due to the mild winter but people are getting anxious to get out on what little ice that has formed which can be dangerous.

Rain and 50 degree weather....not the typical winter weather in Wisconsin.....

"We're hoping for cold weather" says Don Herman of Sunk Diving.

Lakes that are usually covered in several inches of ice are barley covered, if at all.

"We're a little behind right now by prolly a couple of weeks. Normally this bay right now has 8-10 on it, it only has 3-4 on it right now" says Herman.

Experts recommend the ice be 4 inches thick for walking, 6 inches for snowmobiling and up to 15 inches for cars which is hard to come by this winter.

“Right now you are  going go find very little around ne Wisconsin that's going to be safe enough to even walk on right now let alone take snowmobiles/ATV's' cars or trucks on" Darren Kuhn, Conservation Warden Dnr.

Herman recommends checking the ice daily.

"It's old fashion, we just keep checking it. I mean there isn't any technology like a meter, you actually have to go out and chop and measure."
