WISCONSIN (NBC 26) — State hospitals and health systems are warning Wisconsinites to not give medical or financial information to potential scammers.
The Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) said there have been multiple reports of fraudulent calls to patients asking for personal health information and other sensitive data. These scammers claim they are a hospital representative who need the individual's information.
According to WHA, some examples of information requests in these calls include Medicare account numbers, family medical history, and recent medical equipment purchases which can all be used for identity theft.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) reminds everyone to not respond to unsolicited requests of personal information, whether it is made over the phone or through text or email. Do not click on links or open attachments from suspicious sources.
DATCP said if you are doubtful on if this is a legitimate request, contact the hospital at a verified telephone number or through another reputable channel for clarification.
