WISCONSIN (NBC 26) -- Alliant Energy is warning customers of new scams trying to take your money by threatening to shut off your power.

Reports from Alliant Energy customers in Wisconsin and Iowa say that they are receiving calls from scammers pretending to be Alliant Energy. The caller threatens to cut off power in a few hours unless immediate payment is made. These are not legitimate claims, but scam callers are counting on you to be too alarmed to check on your account status.

Alliant Energy states they do not call customers to demand immediate payment. In addition, Alliant Energy will not ask customers to purchase prepaid credit cards and will not ask for payment over email.

Scammers can make calls appear as if they are coming from Alliant Energy. Some scammers may even provide a different phone number that spoofs Alliant Energy's answering system and automated menu.

Alliant Energy's official phone number is 1-800-ALLIANT (800-255-4268) and their website is www.alliantenergy.com, where you can check your account balance.
