State Senator Dave Hansen, a Democrat from Green Bay, says it's time to change Wisconsin's redistricting procedures.
Sen. Hansen plans to he'll reintroduce a bill he originally brought to the senate floor back in 2012. The bill would put the redistricting process in the hands of a non-partisan committee.
The announcement of Hansen's intentions comes after a federal court ruled Wisconsin's legislative districts are unconstitutional. That ruling is likely to be challenged by the state Department of Justice.
State Republicans, were quick to condemn the ruling, and are pushing back against Hansen's announcement.
State Representative, and Republican Majority Leader Jim Steineke of Kaukauna, defended the current districts.
He says, “The legislative maps implemented in 2011 have withstood a litany of legal challenges. I am confident the U.S. Supreme Court will agree that Wisconsin’s legislative maps are constitutional."
States attorneys have 45 days to determine their legal options.
