Madison – State Representative Al Ott (R-Forest Junction) announced today that he will not seek reelection.  First elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1986, Ott has represented the 3rd Assembly District for 30 years.

“It has been my sincere honor and distinct pleasure to represent the people of the 3rd Assembly District,” Ott said.  “Thirty years ago, I ran for the State Assembly out of my genuine desire to serve the public and bring the voice of Northeast Wisconsin to Madison. While much has changed during my tenure, my commitment to my constituents and my desire to enact sound public policy has not.  I am truly blessed and humbled to have had this opportunity.”

During his time in office, Ott successfully advanced legislation to create a dairy investment tax credit, increase penalties for repeat domestic abuse offenders, improve informed consent in tissue donation, require licensing of electricians, recognize and protect the Niagara Escarpment in Northeast Wisconsin, and create the Agricultural Education and Workforce Development Council.

“While there have been many challenges, my work here in the Assembly has been gratifying.  I am proud of my accomplishments on behalf of my constituents and the people of Wisconsin,” Ott said.  It was always my goal to work in a collaborative, bi-partisan way on issues.  I believe I was successful in that effort.”

A highlight of Ott’s career was serving as Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Agriculture from 1995 to 2008. During that time, he worked with both Republicans and Democrats to champion the Agricultural Renewal Initiative. The legislative package focused on investment incentives, agricultural modernization and rural health care. More recently, Ott was charged with leading the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources and Sporting Heritage where he shepherded efforts to simplify regulations, improve opportunities for outdoor recreation, and preserve and strengthen Wisconsin’s rich hunting, fishing, trapping and sporting traditions.

“I thank my constituents for the confidence they have placed in me over the last three decades. I thank my colleagues, on both sides of the aisle, for their hard work and friendship. But most importantly, I thank my wife, Connie, my four children and nine grandchildren for their unwavering love and support. I look forward to spending more time with them all in retirement.”

The 3rd Assembly District includes the communities of Appleton, Brillion, Combined Locks, Kimberly, Little Chute, Menasha, Sherwood and Stockbridge.
