GREEN BAY, WI -- The Green Bay Common Council approved hundreds of thousands of dollars in stadium sales tax funds for restoration and improvement projects Tuesday night.
A slim majority approved $250,000 dollars to fund an expansion and renovation project at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary.
Alderman Randy Scannell is requesting the stadium tax funding for the project, along with $17,500 for projects at Whitney Park, $185,000 for bathrooms at Red Smith Park, and $58,000 for renovations at the National Railroad Museum.
Some aldermen were frustrated by the request, claiming the city's voters were promised all stadium sales tax would be funneled into infrastructure improvements.
But supporters of the funding are pleased, saying the city's parks and attractions are important pieces to the infrastructure puzzle.
"We are part of the infrastructure. We are part of the city parks system," says Wildlife Sanctuary director Mike Reed. "We are part of the infrastructure of this city, and I think it's important to look at the parks, as well as the streets, and all the other worthy projects as important infrastructure within a city."
