APPLETON, Wis.- Margaret Hansen of Chilton is donating blood at the Community Blood Center in Appleton for the first time in 7 years.
"It's a good feeling just to be able to give back to your community a little bit," said Hansen.
The Community Blood Center called Hansen after they've reached critically low levels for blood donations.
"Inventory has gone from basically about a week and a half before the holidays to now we have three days," said President and CEO of Community Blood Center, John Hagins.
That sudden drop off is a direct result of Monday's snow storm, but that's not good news for the blood center.
"One out of every seven people will need a blood transfusion of some sort so it's very common that someone would need a blood transfusion if they went to the hospital," said Hagins.
With so much blood needed, the few donors that are coming in say they're glad to do their part.
"People would die if we weren't here," said donor, Pete Peters of Menasha.
One bag of blood can save up to three lives, so those donating say it's worth it and easy to do.
"It just takes probably about an hour, not much longer so it's very simple," said Hansen.
It's an easy process the blood center says more people need to do to bring blood donation numbers up to a safe level.
