The Manitowoc County Metro Drug Unit arrested a significant heroin source Wednesday in Manitowoc County.
Investigators arrested 28-year-old Fredrick Lamont Smith of Milwaukee for 13 heroin and cocaine related charges.
Investigators had been conducting controlled purchases from Smith since May 2016. They would send an undercover official to meet with Smith where he would supply large amounts of heroin.
Wednesday evening the Drug Unit arranged to purchase around 2 1/2 ounces of heroin.
They met on the west side of the city of Manitowoc and attempted an arrest. Smith tried to run away and led the officers on a short pursuit.
He was taken into custody near USH 151 and Hecker Road.
Officer say Smith threw heroin in a field which was recovered by the K9 Unit.
Investigators seized more than 1/4 pound of heroin from the suspect during the course of the investigation. The street value of the seized heroin is around $30,000.
Cash bail has been set for $250,000. Smith says that is an amount he will not be able to come up with that type of cash. But, according to the prosecution Smith is a flight risk.
Smith is due in court for his initial appearance on Monday.
