A shooting that left a 15-year-old boy dead in Waupaca County has been called a tragic accident.

The victim is Jacob A. Peglow, 15, from rural Waupaca, according to the Waupaca County Sheriff's Office.

On Wednesday, the sheriff's office responded to a report of an accidental shooting on Rieben Road in the Town of Farmington.

A 17-year-old who lived at the home told deputies he accidentally shot his friend Peglow with a .22 caliber pistol and then called 911, deputies said.

When crews arrived, they found the victim with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, according to deputies.

"Life-saving measures had been started until the ambulance crew got there," said Sheriff Brad Hardel. "Ultimately, the 15-year-old succumbed to the injuries from the shot."

Peglow died before being taken to the hospital. The sheriff's office is not releasing any details about what happened leading up to the shooting.

The gun belonged to the homeowner, Sheriff Hardel said, but they are not confirming if that is the 17-year-old's parent.

The Waupaca County Sheriff's Office said this situation is a tragic reminder to treat every gun like it's loaded.

The shooting remains under investigation.

There will be an opportunity for youth to gather Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church at 6:30 p.m. to grieve and remember Peglow. Pastors and youth workers will be available for individual and group conversations, support and prayer.

Counselors and pastors will also be available for both youth and adults at Waupaca High School on Friday from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m.
