ReadyWisconsin, the National Weather Service (NWS), and the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association (WBA) for Wisconsin's Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week (April 11-15, 2016).'
This is the season for severe weather in Wisconsin. Because of that it's an important time of the year to make sure your family is prepared for the worst.
"Tornadoes can occur at anytime, so the kids might be home alone do they know what to do if you're not there to tell them what to do." says Justin Steinbrink with the Brown County Emergency Management.
On Thursday, April 14, 2016, Wisconsin will host two statewide tornado drills. At 1:00pm, the first drill will commence with the National Weather Service issuing a statewide mock tornado watch and at 1:45pm a statewide mock tornado warning will be issued. The second drill will be at 6:55pm with the National Weather Service issuing a statewide mock tornado warning. Many radio and TV stations will participate in the drill. In addition, NOAA weather radios (also known as emergency weather radios) will issue alert messaging and weather sirens will sound across the county.
The statewide tornado drill is an ideal opportunity for schools, businesses and families to practice safe procedures for severe weather. "By taking just a little time out of the day to participate in the drill and talk about severe weather safety will go a long ways in helping everyone be more prepared" said Natalie Easterday, Shawano County Emergency Management Director.
