APPLETON, WI -- Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Sen. Tim Kaine set sights on Northeast Wisconsin Tuesday, rallying hundreds in Appleton to vote early.

The Senator was also criticizing Donald Trump for alleged connections to Russia.

On his first visit to Northeast Wisconsin on the campaign trail, Senator Kaine was praising voters who have taken advantage of voting early for Clinton, and other Democrats in Wisconsin.

"You are not a state at the edge, or a state in the afterthought zone. You are absolutely key," said Kaine to a packed hall on Lawrence University campus.

The VP nominee didn't address the latest concern over Clinton's newly discovered e-mails, instead drawing the focus on Trump.

"Donald Trump has got all these weird connections with Russia," said Kaine.

Clinton's campaign is accusing Russia of trying to influence the election in Trump's favor. On Tuesday, Kaine was also criticizing Trump's claims of a "rigged system."

"You won't defend American Democracy, but you won't condemn another nation that's trying to tinker with American elections? There's something very, very wrong with that," said Kaine.

With the millennial vote having more weight than ever this election, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are working to make sure their message connects with students.

Sophomore Taylor Reifert says he's ready to cast a ballot for his generation.

"It's getting everyone ready to go out, and vote," says Reifert, adding that he's connecting with Kaine and Clinton's messages on the campaign trail, "this is my first time voting in a presidential election. We have a lot of say in our future, and the outcome of this election."

Clinton has not returned to Wisconsin to campaign since April.
