After Sunny Teague and her daughter Sabrina were murdered in June in their home in Hobart, Sunny's friends decided to start a free self-defense class for women to help them better fight off attackers.
Sunny and Sabrina were allegedly stabbed by Sabrina's ex-boyfriend, Jacob Cayer. He was declared incompetent to stand trial.
The free class kicked off Wednesday night at the YWCA in Green Bay with a full group of 50 participants.
It aims to teach women how to escape an attacker in a few ways, as well as protect themselves against different types of attacks.
Instructor Susan Dutton says it all started after a conversation between her and her friend Kathy, both friends of Sunny.
"Kathy came up with the idea of doing this self-defense class in her memory and in her honor, but also in honor of all women who oftentimes face harassment or attack," said Dutton, who is an Aikido instructor.
According to statistics, most women are attacked by people they know, said Dutton. She believes all women should learn self-defense.
The 10-week class is already full. However, they are considering having another class in the spring if there is enough interest, according to Dutton.
