Wisconsin Public Service is warning the public about a scam threat targeting their customers.
The thieves pose as WPS employees saying your bill is past due. The threaten to cut off your power if you don't pay over the phone with an immediate credit card payment.
For Martin Demeny of Northland Cold Storage, it was a scam he quickly identified. He says, "Wisconsin Public Service does not call you. They're not that type of company, and nobody is going to shut your power off directly."
Demeny says staying calm and thinking critically is crucial to not succumb to the scam. "My advice would be to just take a deep breath, sit back and relax and start asking (the scammers) questions." He says he even asked him to name the account.
When the scammer resorted to vague threats without being able to answer his questions, Demeny knew he would be safe.
