Republican Hovde says he's still weighing Senate run

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican businessman Eric Hovde says he's in discussions with possible campaign staff should he decide to enter the U.S. Senate race.

But Hovde said Friday he's not hired anyone and he has made no decision yet about whether to join the race.

Two other Republicans have been running for months. State Sen. Leah Vukmir and Delafield businessman Kevin Nicholson are vying for the chance to take on Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin.

Vukmir has been lining up support from Republican office holders and activists around the state. Nicholson is running his first campaign and has the backing of GOP mega-donor Richard Uihlein.

Hovde previously ran for Senate in 2012. That year he came in second to Tommy Thompson, who then lost to Baldwin.

The primary is Aug. 14.
