The Yonhap news agency reports that North Korea has launched a ballistic missile.
South Korea's military says the missile was fired from an area north of Pyongyang early Wednesday.
The news agency reported South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff saying that it and U.S. authorities are analyzing the trajectory.
Dr. Wayne Patterson, a professor of East Asian history at St. Norbert.St. Norbert College in De Pere, told NBC26 that Americans should expect to see a lot of back and forth between the U.S. and North Korean leadership over the next few days in response to the missile launch.
This launch is the first since Sept. 15 when North Korea fired an intermediate ballistic missile. He said he believes it could possibly be in response to President Trump putting North Korea on the terrorist state list.
While Dr. Patterson said the missile launch does cause some concern, he doesn't believe Americans should panic.
"If I had to predict, he will continue to do these sorts of things that are provocative but not necessarily going over the line to generate an armed response from the United States," Dr. Patterson said.
He explained that North Korea's logic is if other countries like the U.S. can have weapons like that for self-defense, they have every right to possess them as well.
