Protect yourself from the bitter cold with these safety tips

Posted

The weather outside can be frightful this time of year, but you can protect yourself from the bitter winter cold with these safety tips, courtesy of the American Red Cross.

·         Dress in layers: Protect yourself from frostbite and hypothermia by wearing warm, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in several layers.

·         Winterize your vehicle: Keeping your gas tank full with help you avoid a frozen fuel line.

·         Slow down on roadways: Remember the posted speed limits are for dry pavement only. Leave plenty of room for stopping and don’t use cruise control in wintry conditions. If possible, avoid driving when conditions include sleet, freezing rain or drizzle, snow or dense fog. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle just in case.

·         Leave your water running: Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing. Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage. It’s also a good idea to keep your thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and night. “By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze or burst,” the American Red Cross says.

·         Install carbon monoxide alarms: Carbon monoxide can occur when any appliance that burns wood or fuel is malfunctioning or poorly vented. Having carbon monoxide alarms installed in central locations on each level of your home and near sleeping areas will provide you with an early warning if carbon monoxide starts to accumulate. Also make sure all wood / fuel-burning equipment is vented outdoors and kept clear.

·         Keep your pets warm: Bring any pets / companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas and make sure their access to food and water is not blocked by snow drifts, ice or other obstacles.

·         Build an emergency kit well in advance: It’s always a good idea to be prepared! Don’t forget to include critical documents, medications, food, water, blankets and warm clothing for your entire family. You can learn more about building an emergency kit by clicking here.
