Envision Appleton brings 100's of ideas

Posted

New developments today on the Envision Appleton plan that has been discussed by city leaders and the public all week. Tonight city leaders are talking about some of the best ideas suggested by the public to improve the downtown area for generations to come. NBC26 shares some of the changes that many people would like to see.

Some of the best ideas to make downtown Appleton even better are being vetted today by city officials. But the ideas didn't come from city leaders, they came from the public.

Owning a business in downtown Appleton for nearly 30 years, Nathan Weyenberg the owner of Angels Forever and Windows of Light has seen a lot of changes.

"It's got hospitality, it's got retail, it's got lodging, it's got it all," says Weyenberg.

But he like many downtown, wants to continue seeing the progress.

"What great things can we do to downtown Appleton? What great things can we do for Wisconsin Avenue, asks Weyenberg.

Appleton city leaders say they have some ideas, and they came from you.

"People are wanting to see more housing opportunities downtown," says Monica Stage the Deputy Director of the Community and Economic Development department of Appleton.

Just north of College Avenue Stage says there's room for growth, upgrades and business.

"By having just a concentration on College Avenue we're missing opportunities for more employment opportunities more housing opportunities," adds Stage.

Many would also like to see a better showcasing of an amenity, that's just a block away from downtown.

"Funneling people to one of our major assets, which is the Fox River down there," says Weyenberg pointing at the unseen river.

“We're looking at how do we better accommodate moving people from the river front to downtown Appleton," adds Stage.

Some additional suggestions include turning the old YMCA parking lot into a town square, a gathering space. Many would also like to see a facelift give Jones Park. Making it more of an attraction for folk’s downtown than it is today.
