Powerball fever hits Northeast Wisconsin

Posted

FOND DU LAC, Wis.- Ma and Pa Korneli's is the place to be for superstitious Powerball players.

"A lot of people come here because we have the name and the history behind it," said store manager, Carissa Torgersen.

That name is the reason Sam Vallone of Pewaukee traveled an hour just for a few Powerball tickets.

"This has a special karma to it seems to be a lot of different winners, I'm just waiting for it to hit my way, but rumor has it it's been pretty good to a lot of people," said Vallone.

The $500 million jackpot is even bringing out people who don't normally play the lottery.

"I don't invest a lot, it's just fun to play and see how we do," said Bob Mair of Sheboygan.

When it comes to who has the best strategy to win, everyone goes about it differently.

"It's just something that just pops in my head at the time and it's just you know that sounds good, this one sounds good I don't have a process for it," explained John Piekarski of Fond du Lac.

Millionaire hopefuls are checking their numbers and making plans for what they'll do with all that money, but for Vallone he says it's worth the trip.

"Trying to get the luck, be an idiot you might as well be a rich idiot," laughed  Vallone.

With so many people playing the lottery the odds of winning are pretty slim according to a math instructor at Fox Valley Technical College.

"The odds of winning are like 1 in 292 million, that's for the jackpot and really the chance of not winning anything is 96 percent," said Fox Valley Tech math instructor, Kelly Galarneau.

Galarneau did say however if you're going to play try to choose higher numbers.  He says the reason is because people traditionally choose dates like birthdays or anniversaries so higher numbers, above 31, have better chances of winning at least a smaller prize.
