TOWN OF RUSHFORD, WI -- Search efforts are continuing Sunday for a missing man near the Fox River as of 8 AM.
Winnebago County dive teams were called in Saturday after the 39-year-old man disappeared from a hunting camp while looking for a dog.
Rescue teams have been battling sub zero temperatures and strong river currents in their search to find him.
Right now, dive teams are going off what limited information they have about the whereabouts of the man, who was last seen Friday night.
"We exhausted the search on shore," says Lt. Joe Kroncke, of the Winnebago Co. Sheriff's Dept., "that's why we moved into the actual Fox River waterway itself. [We] did a quick search of the area, and found a set of tracks leading somewhat towards the Fox River."
Experts say the Winnebago County Dive/Rescue Team is no doubt facing challenges in their search.
"The water takes away body heat 20 times faster than the air does," says Chris Ederer, of the Neenah Menasha Fire Rescue team. "So, once you start to go down, hypothermia can set in quick."
They're challenges that Ederer knows well as the Dive Team Leader for Neenah Menasha Fire Rescue.
"We have to be ready for it," says Ederer. "We train constantly for it."
In the race against time, Ederer says progress can freeze--literally.
"Things can freeze up," says Ederer, "you can have regulators freezing up."
But Ederer says sub-zero temps still won't freeze sections of the Fox River due to strong currents.
"That current is going to throw around the sediment, so the visibility goes down next to nothing," says Ederer. "Also, you have to fight that current."
It's a fight that Ederer says hinders rescue and recovery efforts in more ways than one.
"You're using up more air, and now you're down less time," says Ederer, "and you have to switch out divers constantly."
Ederer says divers are likely rotating shifts every 15 to 20 minutes because of the frigid temperatures that are only set to drop even further Sunday night.
