After Saturday's shooting outside Antigo High School's prom, law enforcement in our area has taken a closer look at safety protocol when it comes to school events.
Officer Mark Wery, the school resource officer for Kimberly School District through Fox Valley Metro Police, met with school administrators Monday to go over safety measures for the high school's upcoming prom.
"The situation in Antigo has caused everyone to pause, kind of re-evaluate a little bit our safety protocol moving forward for when Kimberly has their prom here in a few weeks," Wery explained.
They won't necessarily change any protocol, according to Wery. However, they will look at ways to make the environment more safe.
"While we have trained for an active shooter event, [there are] steps that we can take in the meantime to make sure that it's going to be a safe environment," he said.
That means looking at things like lighting in the parking lot or number of chaperones.
In nearby Kaukauna, police said they're also doing some legwork before events to make safety the priority.
"We take a look at social media, that's a big thing," said Lt. Jamie Graff with the Kaukauna Police Department. "A lot of this stuff starts on Facebook or through texting."
Both departments say doing more in advance can keep students and the community safe when the time comes.
"We work well with the district, and obviously our top priority is to keep the kids, and spectators and everyone else safe at these events," said Lt. Graff.
Those events can include anything from prom to sporting events to school concerts. Basically, any large event where police presence is needed.
