Drunk driving crackdown in full effect in WI

Posted

GREEN BAY, WI -- Police across Northeast Wisconsin are out in full force this New Year's Eve.

The goal: cracking down on drunk driving on a night notorious for drinking.

It's areas, like the Broadway District, in downtown Green Bay--where people are flooding the bars, celebrating the final day of 2015--that has police paying close attention tonight.

"We have the bar district, as you can see to the north and to the south, on Washington Street," says Lt. Jason Allen, with the Green Bay Police.

Allen, who could be seen sitting in his squad car at the intersection of Washington St. and Cherry St. tonight, is just one of many officers looking for more signs of drunk driving than just swerving.

"Running red lights, failing to use signals," lists Allen, "not using their head lamps during hours of darkness, running stop signs, varying speeds."

Wisconsin's police departments have been warning of tonight's crackdown all week, and encouraging people on social media to plan ahead, with a sober driver.

"Get those options out there--the safe ride home program," says officer Michael Lambie, with the Fox Valley Metro PD. "Uber is now available in the Fox Valley, [and] Appleton cab companies."

If a sober cab falls through, Lambie hopes people will even consider walking home if they're dressed for it.

"If you're going to be exposed to any elements tonight for any extended period of time, it's always nice to pack extra mittens, gloves," says Lambie.

Police are clear: tonight is a zero tolerance situation for drunk driving.

If you still don't have a sober ride lined up, and you're at a bar, just ask the bartender for help.

They likely have the contact information you need to lock in a safe ride home.
