MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin and Democratic legislators are calling to repeal a portion of the state's abortion laws struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court rejected a Wisconsin appeal last week seeking to reinstate a law requiring doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. The decision came a day after the court ruled similar Texas regulations are medically unnecessary and unconstitutionally limit a woman's right to abortion.
The provision in Wisconsin law is now null, but Planned Parenthood legal and policy associate Mel Barnes says allowing it to stay on the books violates the dignity and civil liberties of Wisconsin women.
Spokeswomen for Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald and Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos didn't immediately respond to emails seeking comment.
