GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- As we head closer to Christmas, students at Fort Howard Elementary in Green Bay are learning the value of giving back to those in need.

First grader Demajae Jefferson and his peers are working hard to put together what they call "hygiene kits". It's for residents at the New Community Shelter.

A service-learning project, teachers say helps students learn the value of empathy.

“One of the units we teach is called citizenship, so we try and find ways to get kids to truly mean to be a citizen not only at home but also in the community,” said first grade teacher Lara Henke.

With these lessons of compassion, Henke says she sees her students faces light up with joy, knowing they're helping people in need, and it's perfect timing in the season of giving.
