Parents Who Host Lose the Most Campaign kicks...

Posted

Parents who host lose the most, that's what police are reminding Northeast Wisconsin families tonight as the party season swings into motion.

With prom and graduation comes celebration and parties. But today community leaders are reminding adults that a party shouldn't include supplying or turning a blind eye to kids drinking at your home.

If an adult knows, or even should know that underage drinking is going on at their home in De Pere, they could be slapped with a 500 to five thousand dollar fine.

"It's actually illegal and there are ramifications in our communities," says Chrystal Woller the Health Director of the city of De Pere Health Department.

And many other communities in northeast Wisconsin have similar social host ordinances in the books, including Ashwaubenon.

"For lack of a better term it's a huge no-no to buy alcohol for someone else's kid," adds Captain Jody Crocker of Ashwaubenon’s Public Safety department.

That's why the “Parents Who Host, Lose the Most” campaign, is being pushed right now across the state.

"Any awareness campaign to curtail this behavior is important. Especially now during prom season and graduation… Times to celebrate," adds Woller.

"The parents that are asked to host parties should not be afraid to be the bad guy," adds Capt. Crocker.

Because while 28 percent of adults in Brown county admit to binge drinking.

"Alcohol use or excessive alcohol use in youth effects brain development," says Woller.

Local authorities say that it shouldn't be a problem we allow our youth to engage in, right under our nose.

You'll be seeing those "Parents Who Host Lose the Most" signs popping up across communities in the next couple of weeks. It could serve as a transition to a conversation about drinking, between you and your kids.
