APPLETON, Wi. - The Appleton Fire Department responded to a multi-family home at 1102 W. Eighth Street Friday night for reports of a possible fire. There, they found smoldering books on the patio and inside the upper unit.
Firefighters determined the cause of the fire was an unattended candle on a book shelf. There was damage to the books, the book shelf, and the wall behind the shelf. There was also some smoke damage throughout the upper unit.
The fire department was able to extinguish the fire. There were no injuries.
This fire resulted in the department's second "red" bulb in the "Keep The Wreath Green" campaign. The fire department reminds the public that candles should not be left unattended or near combustible materials. Every home should also have a working smoke detector.
