Oshkosh West High School was put on lockdown at about 11:39 a.m. Thursday as police were called to a report of a student with a gun.
Middle school students who had been let out of summer school were waiting for rides outside the school, according to the school's principal, Erin Kohl.
One student reported to the school monitor that a student had told her they had a gun in their backpack, Kohl said.
School administrators went to the location where the middle school students were as police were arriving. They looked in the backpack and there was no weapon inside. They did locate a toy cap gun.
The lockdown lasted less than 5 minutes, according to Kohl.
