Officers travel to Madison to honor fallen colleague

Posted

Today a group of Wausau area police officers began a long journey to honor a fallen officer.

They saw Governor Scott Walker honor officers who lost their lives at the annual law enforcement memorial ceremony.

This year, that includes Jason Weiland from the Everest Metropolitan Police Department.

Detective Weiland was killed by a gunman during a standoff in March 2017.

Officers who knew and worked with Weiland said that they wanted to be at this ceremony today.

Officers said that it lets them reflect on what happened and bring some closure to incident, but others said this ceremony brings mixed emotions.

They said today is a reminder that Weiland is no longer with them, but also that many of their colleagues are together during this time.

"It's a blessed experience to have that many people that you know and care about and want to share this with and we got that many more people to lean on and talk about it," Officer Dan Goff said.

Today is just the start of the journey for many of these officers.

Next they will be flying to Washington D.C. where Detective Weiland will have his name addedto the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
