NWTC event helps human trafficking survivors

Posted

As the problem of human trafficking grows in Northeast Wisconsin, awareness has become more important.

On Wednesday, NWTC taught students, staff and the community about the trafficking problem in the area as part of a month-long focus on healthy relationships and domestic violence awareness.

The educational event also included a donation drive for the organization Eye Heart World, which puts together victim response bags for human trafficking survivors.

These bags are filled with toiletries, clothes, and snacks, among other things. First responders give the bags to victims when they're rescued, helping them during a vulnerable time.

A series of lectures on Wednesday also taught attendees more about what human trafficking is and how to recognize possible victims.

"We bring it to our students and faculty and staff so that they know what to look for, and if they see a student that may be struggling in their classes or who might be going through some personal problems, they can maybe look for the warning signs of someone who might be involved in human trafficking," said Wes Johnson, a counselor at NWTC.

The donation drive for Eye Heart World's victim response bags is going on until November 30th on NWTC's campus. They are looking for cash donations, in addition to the following products in travel size products and new clothing sizes small to large:

Deodorant

Chap Stick

Facial wipes

Hair ties

Comb

Socks

Undergarments

Sweatpants

Sweatshirts

Closed-toe slippers

Non-perishable snacks
