Northeast Wisconsin Technical College broke ground Monday on a new energy-efficient education building.
The Great Lakes Energy Education Center will offer classes for power generation, distribution and conservation degree work.
It will be powered by renewable energy and showcase energy-efficient design technologies, according to NWTC.
The center is designed to be "zero net energy capable," meaning its energy consumption will be about equal to the renewable energy it generates.
The school held a beam-setting ceremony Monday to celebrate the new construction.
It will be only the third such building in Wisconsin, the school said Monday.
"NWTC has received a National Science Foundation grant to create curriculum that will assist colleges nationwide in creating more high-quality energy education to alleviate current and projected workforce shortages," the school announced.
It is expected to be completed in early spring 2018.
