A North Fond du Lac man will spend 15 years in prison for abusing his former girlfriend's then 13-month-old child.

A jury found Jason Schifelbine, 37, guilty of physical abuse of a child - intentionally causing great bodily harm in June. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and 10 years extended supervision this week.

The child was found to be unconscious at St. Agnes Hospital in August of 2014 and had to be flown to Children's Hospital in Milwaukee, according to court documents.

Schifelbine told police the child had fallen off the kitchen counter, but the doctor who treated the child said that story was inconsistent with the injuries, the criminal complaint said.

The child had brain swelling on the right side, doctors said. In the criminal complaint, one doctor reported the brain injury the child suffered was "severe and life-threatening."

Doctors also said the victim had older bruising on the forehead, eyes, cheeks, chest and abdomen.

Schifelbine was found guilty of abuse after a three-day jury trial in June.

A forensic pediatrician testified at Schifelbine's trial that the injuries the child suffered were "highly unusual" and showed a strong indication of suspected child abuse, District Attorney Eric Toney said.
