NBC26's new 3 Degree Guarantee partner is NEWCAP, Inc. The agency serves 10,000 people a year in Northeast Wisconsin. In Marinette, their food pantry is making a big difference. Mike Evans has been coming to the pantry for more than ten years.
"These people are the best. They help anyone," he says.
NEWCAP leaders say one in five people are living in poverty in Marinette, so the food pantry is busy serving 195 families every month. Their goal is simple.
"To move people from poverty to independence and self sufficiency and improve communities," explains NEWCAP CEO Cheryl Detrick.
They help people from all walks of life whether they're young families or the elderly.
"Everybody's grateful for food, that's a necessity" says NEWCAP Community Access Director Peggy Zielinski.
Iva Wolf has been volunteering at the pantry for 20 years. "It's not even a job. I like coming to work. I like helping people. I get people that hug me. I get people that cry."
For people like Mike, NEWCAP is their lifeline. "They help you with food, clothing, a place to stay."
NBC26 is proud to help them continue to serve the community. Every time Chief Meteorologist Cameron Moreland gets within three degrees of his forecasted high temperature for the day, NBC26 will donate $100 to NEWCAP's pantry in Marinette to help fight hunger in the Northwoods.
