New website launched for concealed & carry licenses

Applying for a license to carry a concealed weapon in Wisconsin will soon be streamlined with access to a new website, according to Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel.

Schimel announced the improvements Friday.

“Wisconsin has a proud sporting heritage and rich tradition of firearms ownership, and I am proud to lead the agency committed to ensuring law abiding citizens can exercise their Second Amendment rights by carrying concealed,” said Attorney General Schimel.

Eligible Wisconsin residents will have the capability of not only applying for a CCW license, but will also have the ability to renew an existing license on the state's new website by clicking here.

CCW licenses must be renewed every five years. The Wisconsin Department of Justice (Wis. DOJ) issues notices 120 days before a resident's license expires.

CCW license renewals cost $22, do not require new or additional training, and will expire five years from the date the new license is issued.

New CCW licenses require an approved training and a $40 fee. License renewals and new applications will be processed within 21 days, per Wisconsin State Statute, according to Wisconsin DOJ officials.

In the first six months of 2016, the Wis. DOJ Criminal Information Bureau (CIB) processed 31,842 CCW applications, and 82,233 background checks for handgun transfers by a Wisconsin firearms dealer, officials said.

Those numbers are significantly higher than previous years.

"During the first six months of 2015 the Firearms Unit processed 22,787 CCW applications and handled 59,465 requests for Handgun Hotline background checks," Wis. DOJ officials said.

Although Wisconsin has reciprocity with several other states for CCW license holders, "a Wisconsin resident must have a Wisconsin concealed carry license in order to carry in Wisconsin, even if that individual holds a valid concealed carry license from another state," Wis. DOJ officials say.
