On Monday, the Wisconsin Professional Police Association released the findings of its 6th annual poll. The St. Norbert College Strategic Research Institute surveyed 400 Wisconsin residents between February 26th and March 28th, and here's a sample of how they responded.
When asked, "Do you favor or oppose teachers carrying guns in schools?," 39% said favor while 57% opposed. More women than men were against it.
Another question asked, "When law enforcement officers use deadly force, how much of the time do you believe it is necessary and justified? 45% said "always" or "most of the time" which is down from 54% last year.
When asked, "Do you think police officers should treat people addicted to opioids as criminal offenders of persons in need of care and treatment?" 77% said care and treatment.
The survey touched on other topics such as concealed carry and body cameras.
WPPA's Executive Director, Jim Palmer, said the group will use the findings from the entire poll to continue to strengthen the relationship between police and the public they serve.
"Being able to have a better understanding of how people feel about law enforcement, we hope can help us bridge that divide."
Palmer said the poll will also help his lobbying group decide which areas they want to push for change when they go to the state legislature.
