New law bans drivers from talking on hand-held cell phones in construction zones

Posted
A new state law goes into effect this Saturday that makes it illegal for drivers to talk on hand-held cell phones in construction zones. Fines start at  $40 for the first offense and go up to $100 if you're a repeat offender. You also run the risk of having the fine doubled, because you're in a construction zone.

State troopers say the new rules are meant to improve safety for highway workers and drivers.

"We're trying to help those workers that are present in work zones to reduce distracted driving. It's just one more thing to focus your driving on, so it's designed to reduce distractions while going through work zones to keep those workers safe," said Jamie Kahkola of the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The Department of Transportation says Wisconsin has about 2,000 work zone crashes every year.

Under the new law, you will still be allowed to use hands-free and bluetooth devices in construction zones, as well as dial 911 in an emergency.
