New gene therapy could win fight against cancer

Posted

Doctors at Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology are hopeful a new breakthrough therapy could win the fight against cancer.

The new gene therapy uses the power of genetic modification, teaching genes to destroy cancer cells.

The technique could be used for every patient, doctors said.

"It's taking cells from the body in the lab, making them fight cancer, and then giving them back to the patient so that those cells will fight the cancer cells," said Dr. Timothy Goggins, Chief Medical Officer at Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology.

The FDA has recommended the procedure for approval. Cancer centers across the country will test the pilot program.
