Sexual assault victims in Wisconsin are getting a huge helping hand in tracking down their offenders. The Wisconsin Department of justice and the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault also known as WCASA are teaming up to address the amount of untested rape kits in the state.
On Monday, Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel and WCASA unveiled the "By Your Side Campaign" during a stop at the Green Bay Botanical Garden.
It's part of a four-million dollar grant that goes towards testing rape kits.
Schimel says each kit can cost up to a thousand dollars and the state has thousands that are untested.
One sexual assault survivor says she wishes the grant was around sooner.
" I wish this would've happend years ago when I went through my assault, however, it's now in fruition and there are so many people out there that care and want to help survivors," said Lisa Penterman.
Right now hundreds of kits are being test. Schimel says the rape kits will only be tested if the victim asks. If they do not have consent from the victim, they'll stay at the crime lab untested for 10 years.
