Leaders announced plans Monday in Green Bay to battle veteran homelessness. The Welcome Home Veterans initiative will use $5 million in energy assistance money to give veterans help with paying rent, security deposits, and utility bills to get them back on their feet.
"This whole program kicks off, works together in collaboration and in connection with our county partners, our city partners, state, Governor Walker's goals, the lieutenant governor's goals, of finding ways we can meet the needs of our veterans for the future," said John Scocos, Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs.
The money is available through the Heating Assistance Fund after a milder than expected winter.
