Neenah school district tightens volunteer policy

The Neenah School Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday night to require any district volunteer or chaperone to get a background check.

The policy change also bans any individual currently on a registered sex offender list from volunteering in the district's schools.

This action comes after the district learned that a parent, who is a registered sex offender, was volunteering at the Washington School of Early Learning.

That person is on the sex offender list after being in contact with child pornography materials.

District leaders said that the parent was not alone with children, and partly because of that, didn't need to get a background check.

Now though, the district is strengthening that policy.

"I think it's also providing assurances to our families, which we really need to make sure our kids are safe, we need to make sure that we are consistent," Superintendent Dr. Mary Pfeiffer said. "It also provides the consistency between buildings between who is getting a background check and who isn't getting a background check."

Tuesday is that start of the process.

There was a lot of discussion between board members regarding the language of the policy.

That will be adjusted at a later date.

Tuesday, the board wanted to to take a provisional vote to address the issue immediately.
